چکیده

This paper studies the design of low-cost survivable wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) networks. To achieve survivability, lightpaths are arranged as a set of rings. Arrangement in rings is also necessary to support SONET/SDH protection schemes such as 4FBLSR above the optical layer. This is expected to be the most common architecture in regional (metro) networks [9]. We assume that we are given a set of lightpaths in an arbitrary network topology and aim at finding a partition of the lightpaths to rings adding a minimum number of lightpaths to the original set. The cost measure that we consider (number of lightpaths) reflects the switching cost of the entire network. In the case of a SONET/SDH higher layer, the number of lightpaths is equal to the number of add-drop multiplexers (ADMs) (since two subsequent lightpaths in a ring can share an ADM at the common node). We prove some negative results on the tractability and approximability of the problem and provide an approximation algorithm with a worst case approximation ratio of 8/5. We study some special cases in which the performance of the algorithm is improved. A similar problem was introduced, motivated, and studied in [9] and recently in [13] (where it was termed minimum ADM problem). However, these two works focused on a ring topology while we generalize the problem to an arbitrary network topology.

Hop-Constrained Node Survivable Network Design: an Application to MPLS over WDM

This paper addresses hop-constrained node survivable networks, i.e., networks protecting the demands through node disjoint paths and, simultaneously, guaranteeing a maximum number of hops for all demand paths in any failure situation. This problem is studied in the context of a MPLS over WDM network design problem. Given the WDM network topology and the traffic demand matrix, which includes the...

Dynamic lightpath provisioning with signal quality guarantees in survivable translucent optical networks.

This paper studies the problem of signal-quality-guaranteed lightpath provisioning in survivable translucent optical networks under dynamic traffic. A new protection scheme, called regeneration-segment protection (RSP), is proposed. Provisioning approaches with shared path protection and shared RSP are presented. Two main signal quality constraints are integrated with the provisioning problem. ...

A heuristic algorithm for shared segment protection in mesh WDM networks with limited backup path/segments length

This paper investigates the problem of dynamic survivable lightpath provisioning against single-link failure in optical mesh networks employingwavelength-divisionmultiplexing (WDM).We focus on the special problem of provisioning lightpath requests according to their differentiated protection-switching time, since lightpath may have different protection-switching time requirements. We assume tha...

Extension of segment protection for bandwidth efficiency and differentiated quality of protection in optical/MPLS networks

This paper investigates the problem of dynamic survivable lightpath provisioning against single node/link failures in optical mesh networks employing wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). We unify various forms of segment protection into generalized segment protection (GSP). In GSP, the working path of a lightpath is divided into multiple overlapping working segments, each of which is protect...

Optimum Arrangement of Reliable Label-Switched Paths in MPLS Over Optical Networks

In MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) over optical networks, both the optical level and the MPLS level fault recovery can be considered. Generally, a more flexible path arrangement can be realized by the MPLS level recovery, while fast recovery can be achieved by the optical level recovery. When the optical level recovery is adopted, only normal traffic is carried through the working lightpa...
